Patrick Brame

Academic Coach

Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania means I am acutely aware of the ways major transitions manifest — emotionally, mentally, and physically. I began my post-secondary education at Penn State University where I found myself “weeded out” of Computer Engineering in my first year.  While simultaneously working retail, waiting tables, or landscaping, I explored a smorgasbord of interests and majors before landing on Film and Media Studies for my bachelor’s degree. I then continued my education literally across the country: first earning a master’s in Cinema Studies at San Francisco State University and then a Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in Media, Cinema, and Digital Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. At UWM I gained experience working with undergraduate students by teaching college writing and film and media history as well as tutoring at the Writing Center. Academia didn’t come naturally to me so I understand the skills required to navigate it: effective time management, prioritizing mental health, and cultivating professional and personal support systems. I meet students where they are and work collaboratively to map out their future goals.
