Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Architectural Studies (B.A. Arch. Studies) majors typically take the following courses in the fall semester of their first year:

First-Year Experience Learning Community Courses

We will register you in these courses.

  1. Philosophy (PHIL 201)
  2. English Composition (ENG 101) OR Theology (TRS 201)

Why am I taking these classes?  Honors students take equivalent honors courses.

Major and Elective Courses

You will need to choose and register for these courses.

  1. Introduction to Architecture (ARPL 101)
  2. Calculus I (MATH 111) or Probability and Statistics (MATH 114) (see placement information below)
  3. A literature or social science liberal arts foundations course

Math placement

Although your major does not strictly require you to take calculus, we recommend you take the math placement exam to determine what math course is the right level for you. For more information on math placement, please review the Mathematics Department’s placement exam instructions.

Language placement

Your major requires you to complete the study of a foreign language through the intermediate level. However, the course map for the architectural studies major does not have room for most students to begin their study of a language in the first year. Therefore, we recommend you wait to take the language placement exam until later. If you are confident that you can demonstrate proficiency that will result in you testing out of intermediate level of a language, you may opt to take the exam now. Consult with your advisor to determine the best course of action if this is the case.

About Your First Semester Courses

To begin your study of architecture this fall, you should register for “Introduction to Architecture” (ARPL 101). Besides an introduction to the world of design and architecture, this class will help you raise your powers of observation and awareness of the quality of the designed environment.

Architectural Studies majors need to take either calculus or probability and statistics. Which you choose is up to you, but keep in mind that Architectural Studies majors often decide to change their major to the BS in Architecture, which requires calculus. If you decide to go with calculus, take the math placement exam to determine if you can register for Calculus for Social or Life Sciences I (MATH 111). If you prefer probability and statistics, register for MATH 114.

For your fifth class, you should take an approved literature or social science foundation course as part of Liberal Arts requirements.
